The Daybed – Couch By Day, Bed By Night

When you only have one spare bedroom, it has to serve several purposes. You need multifunctional furniture to make it work. Enter the daybed. With a daybed, you get a bed with a real, comfortable mattress and a sofa for use during the day.

When you think of daybeds, you probably think of something that is lacy and frilly like the ones you see in little girl’s rooms. While these styles can still be found, today’s choices are as varied as the people that shop for them. And, with all of the frame, mattress, and linen choices out there, you can certainly find something to meet your needs.

The first thing to look at when you’re shopping is the frame. Daybed frames surround the mattress on two or three sides and can be made of metal, wood or a combination. Metal frames usually resemble brass beds and can be either highly polished or painted to meet your decorating needs.

Wooden frames can be made from any strong type of wood, which can bear the weight of the mattress, carved into various shapes. From traditional to highly modern, you can find the design most at home for your space. Wood, of course, can also be stained or painted to match any decor. Alternatively, your wooden frame may be upholstered to resemble a more traditional sofa.

Some daybeds also include an extra frame for a trundle. A trundle stores an extra mattress under the bed, rolling in and out as needed. Then you have more extra sleep space when needed. Some trundle beds roll out, staying close to the ground, while others lift the mattress to the same height as the daybed. This pop-up model is great for use by a couple or for children’s sleepovers.

The next thing to remember when buying a daybed is to choose a high quality mattress. Since there is no box spring for support, you will need the highest level of support possible. Another factor to consider is the sidewall strength of a mattress. Since it will also serve as a couch, you need strong sidewalls that will not sag with repeated use as a seating surface.

Finally, you will need to find the appropriate linens. It used to be that finding daybed linens was difficult, but many stores now carry complete daybed packages. These packages include a skirt to hide the lower frame and/or trundle with a mattress. Also in the package will be a comforter or bedspread to cover the main seating surface. Finally, some packages even include pillows to cushion the back when used as a sofa. These packages come in a variety of fabrics and patterns so you should be able to find one to suit your taste.

Don’t let the decision of what to do with that spare room end what is an otherwise healthy marriage. Compromise with a daybed. You get a couch for that office while your spouse gets a bed with a comfortable mattress for the guest room.
